The Frigate Bird: Flying Boards

I had the pleasure of working with Whitney Auer, a full-time Ferrier by trade and an enthusiast of surfboards, wakeboarding, and time on the water. Whitney asked me to help him design a logo for his surfboard company “Whit Auer Surfboards.” We chose a frigate bird for his logo because the frigate bird is a large seabird known for its impressive wingspan and forked tail, found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. This is in essence where the surfboard shines—swooping in the water like a frigate bird diving for fish. A shared agility between the logo and the board creates continuity, while the simplicity is easy to put on different surfaces.
